ARTISTIC MONASTICISM
Monasticism is a style of living in which members of a particular religion separate themselves from mainstream society. The Monastery serves as a sanctuary for those who would like to leave the distractions of everyday life behind in order to master the precepts of their spiritual beliefs. Likewise, it is the goal of the Over-the-Rhine Brewery District Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation to design a living experience in which artists, who utilize an industrial means of production, are given the opportunity to live within closer proximity to their artwork. The result is an atmosphere in which all aspects of life revolve around the artists’ crafts.
The Chapel Gallery is evocative of the traditional church typology, and conceptually signifies the monastic relationship between the artists and the art gallery. The art gallery is posited as the center of the art world or the “Church” of art. The main store, whose creative facade evokes a stained glass window, is located on the opposite side of the building. The overall shifted composition of the building emphasizes the latent tension between the gallery and the store; art as “expression” and art as “product”. Elements of the building’s design, including the exciting complexity of the building’s spaces and slides that connect the residential units to the workspaces below, inspire creativity and make the building an exciting place to live and work. |
